Yay, Hilary!

QUESTION: You spoke a lot about being a woman and how women are a necessity to the world right now. How has – especially being a mother. How has it been dealing with other world leaders who aren’t as accepting of the role of women for example, in different countries who don’t really respect women? How has that been trying to get them to cooperate with you as a female yourself?
SECRETARY CLINTON: Well, I don’t feel like I’ve had any problems either as a senator or in my short tenure as Secretary of State, because I hold an official position and I represent the – in the first case, the United States Senate, or in this case, as the representative of the United States. So there is a funny kind of difference that sometimes goes on in some countries that are not particularly supportive of women in official positions. I think they just kind of ignore the fact that they’re dealing with someone who’s a woman. That seems to be almost a change that goes on in their mind.
So I don’t have any problems with that, but I do believe that it’s important for someone in my position to raise the role of women on an ongoing basis, even in countries where women are not given full and equal rights. So I don’t think it’s enough that people deal with me; I want them to deal with their own women, I want them to think about giving all women the rights to be fully functioning, productive citizens. So that is part of the mission that I feel I carry as the Secretary of State of the United States, and that’s what I intend to promote as I travel around the world talking about a lot of these important matters that are really at the core of the kind of future we’re going to have for ourselves and our children. (Applause.)

Oregon Trail

Do you remember playing that game in school? It was my favorite activity in elementary school! I found the exact same version online (same sounds and all). I tried to ford the Kansas River. Sorry, Eric! :-(

I said Happy Birthday to Lance on Facebook yesterday (and the card is in the mail!), but I forgot to post it here. Happy Birthday, brother!

Just because

Pearls Before Swine

My students

Every Friday my students have to write a blog post analyzing a current event. They also have to comment on three of their classmates' blogs. I really love reading their thoughts each weekend. (Although, I must say, I also love that my student teacher is now grading those blogs every weekend... at least through the end of April!)

Most of the students are very thoughtful in their comments and analyses. By thoughtful, I dont' mean, oh, I'm so sweet. I mean that their comments are usually very genuine and well-thought-out.

I just wanted to post part of what one of my kids wrote this week in response to the NY Post monkey cartoon.
I do not understand why people are anti-gay or racist or prejudiced towards anything. I do not understand why people cannot just get along and learn to work together.
Thanks, kid :-)

PS. The student was writing in response to an article about Sean Delonas's other offensive cartoons.

Wow, I only have 6 posts for February and it's the 11th! I've been totally slacking :-)

Eric is out of town this week for work. It's not nearly as fun at home without him! He'll be back tomorrow, though... just in time for me to make him be quiet while I watch Grey's! Speaking of, I've been SO busy lately. On Sunday after Zumba with Katylin, she asked me how I liked that week's episode. I hadn't even watched it. In fact, I didn't even REALIZE that I hadn't watched it until she asked me about it! Good thing my DVR is set to record it automatically :-) I got to watch it on Sunday evening, instead. It was good!

My student teacher took over my 4th period class starting yesterday. I didn't say a word the whole period -- tough for me to do! She did great, though. I hope the kids haven't scared her away from teaching! I remember when I was just starting, I was amazed at how much is going on the whole period that you really have to be aware of. I don't even think about it now, but watching her, I remembered how overwhelming it all was! I'm glad I can tell her it gets easier, though.

House hunting is still going well. Hopefully I can post an update in the next two weeks.

I'm drinking wine out of a tupperware cup right now. What a day!

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan came to my school today for a press conference to promote education funding in the stimulus package. That's my principal there, introducing him in the library. How about that?

"There is no more immediate way to stimulate the economy--short-term and long-term--than to keep teachers teaching and to keep students learning," Duncan said. "As the bill moves to conference, we must get every dollar possible into America's classrooms."

Democratic majority?

There's just a lot of great stuff to share this weekend! :-)

Why can't you just let them be?

Can't you see how happy these families are? Why force them apart? Why does it matter so much to you? Just let them be!

I got this from over at Daily Kos. One of the diarists said it should be made into a billboard in DC. I totally agree. Just plaster it right outside the Senate offices.

Our neighbor's house (across the street) caught on fire today. Space heater. New. Had only been on for 1 hour.
