Letter from President Obama re: Kennedy's passing

Michelle and I were heartbroken to learn this morning of the death of our dear friend, Senator Ted Kennedy.

For nearly five decades, virtually every major piece of legislation to advance the civil rights, health and economic well-being of the American people bore his name and resulted from his efforts.

His ideas and ideals are stamped on scores of laws and reflected in millions of lives -- in seniors who know new dignity; in families that know new opportunity; in children who know education's promise; and in all who can pursue their dream in an America that is more equal and more just, including me.

In the United States Senate, I can think of no one who engendered greater respect or affection from members of both sides of the aisle. His seriousness of purpose was perpetually matched by humility, warmth and good cheer. He battled passionately on the Senate floor for the causes that he held de
ar, and yet still maintained warm friendships across party lines. And that's one reason he became not only one of the greatest senators of our time, but one of the most accomplished Americans ever to serve our democracy.

I personally valued his wise counsel in the Senate, where, regardless of the swirl of events, he always had time for a new colleague. I cherished his confidence and momentous support in my race
for the Presidency. And even as he waged a valiant struggle with a mortal illness, I've benefited as President from his encouragement and wisdom.

His fight gave us the opportunity we were denied when his brothers John and Robert were taken from us: the blessing of time to say thank you and goodbye. The outpouring of love, gratitude and fond memories to which we've all borne witness is a testament to the way this singular figure in American history touched so many lives.

For America, he was a defender of
a dream. For his family, he was a guardian. Our hearts and prayers go out to them today -- to his wonderful wife, Vicki, his children Ted Jr., Patrick and Kara, his grandchildren and his extended family.

Today, our country mourns. We say goodbye to a friend and a true leader who challenged us all to live out our noblest values. And we give thanks for his memory, which inspires us still.

Sincerely,

President Barack Obam

Running and things

Ramona got a pretty new collar this weekend - I love it on her!

And this is a little sample of her running in circles in the backyard. She's fun!

PS. Wow, that video quality is terrible! But, you get the idea!

Seven Quick Takes

One.
Ramona just rediscovered the rawhide bone we gave her when she first moved in. It was at the bottom of her toy bin, having made no lasting impression on her. Once rediscovered, she spent two or three days chewing on it and carrying it around the house like a cigarette hanging from her lips. Last night, she decided she needed to take it outside with her. Off she went, quickly finding a place along the back fence to bury it for safe-keeping. It made me laugh. When we bought the bones, we got a pack of six, so I pulled another one out and threw it in her crate. She came back inside to find her new bone magically sitting out for her. She chewed on it for about five minutes, and then asked to go back outside, where she found a new spot to bury the second bone. LOL. After coming back inside, she looked at me for a bit. I relented, but made her watch me while I took the third bone out of the bag. I didn't want her thinking it was one of the two bones she had so carefully buried. So, she's been chewing the new bone and carrying it around since then. No attempts to bury it just yet. She's funny.

Two.
I've been watching The Tudors on Netflix instant queue. Oh my goodness, I love anything that has to do with royal English scandal. The Henry VIII story is my favorite to tell the kids at school. They get so into it - they can't believe that those "dead white guys" actually had so much drama in their lives! Good times. I finished Season One yesterday, and have only gotten through the first episode of Season Two. Catherine (Katarina) was just forced to leave the castle so Henry and Ann can get married. Drama! A friend commented about it on Facebook: "Doesn't it annoy you how historically flaky it is? I LOVED the series until I got my google on." Bah, I say. The basic premise of the story is accurate, so let me enjoy the writers' creative liberties!

Three.
I'm trying to find a good wall option to mount our tv. There's no room for it to stick out. I think I've found a good paneling option at ikea. I'll have to go check it out and post pictures if it works. I mounted a shelf on another wall last week, and had some trouble finding the studs to make it stable. Probably because I bought the cheapest stud finder they had at Home Depot. Perhaps we'll have to buy another one. I can just imagine the tv coming crashing down because I did a poor job mounting it!

Four.
It is HOT here. Gross. I hate being hot, and I'm pretty much sweating all of the time, even with the a/c on non-stop! I basically never leave the house these days because it's so disgusting out there. Booooo.

Five.
I love to buy jewelry. It doesn't have to be expensive - in fact, I prefer the homemade pieces at flea/farmer's markets. Rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets... it doesn't matter. Lately, I've been spending all of my money over at etsy. I can't help myself! It might be a sickness.

Six.
What is today? August 21? So, I only have 10 more days until I have to be back at school. Wow, that came quick! Oops, I never even posted about my Korea trip. I'll have to get to that one of these days... but first, I'm supposed to write a lesson plan about Korea as part of the fellowship. That's due by the end of the month. It doesn't take me long to write a lesson plan... I just have to actually sit down and do it.

Seven.
Did I mention it's hot? Especially upstairs where my computer is. So, I'm ending this post and heading downstairs where the air is a bit cooler.

Flowers

I planted some flower seeds before I left for Korea. They're growing really well, and one has finally flowered! Yay!

Oh, and Ramona loves to play in the yard! :-)

Shorts??

I just flipped over to NBC's Today Show to see them discussing whether or not it was appropriate for Michelle Obama to be wearing shorts on a family vacation to the Grand Canyon. WTF?? Why is this even a story? It's August, they're on vacation, and she's no dummy! Nobody questioned whether or not it was appropriate for Barack to go running on the beach without a shirt on when they vacationed in Hawaii. I have to assume that this is making "the news" because she's a woman. Ridiculous.

There's even a poll!!

House updates

I meant to post this a LONG time ago, but never did! While I was in Korea, Eric worked on finishing the basement. Our neighbor helped him with the floors, and the whole thing looks great! Here are before, middle, and after pictures...

Engagement photos

We just got the link to our engagement shots. Our photographer is awesome - I love so many of them! We spent about $250 just now ordering prints of our favorites. Whoops, lol! There are so many great shots to choose from, but here is just a teesy taste of my favorites!

Video fix

The video of Alivia should work for everyone now...
Thanks for letting me know!

Seven Quick Takes - Picture Edition

One.
Ramona's #1 favorite thing to do in the whole world is go on car rides with her head hanging out the window. Every time we have to stop, she starts crying and going back and forth between the two windows trying to figure out how to make the wind start up again. Seriously, Ramona Heaven would be non-stop car rides and squeaky toys.

Two.
Alivia can now roll over in both directions (front to back, back to front). She's even trying to scooch now, but she hasn't quite figured out how to use her arms to make herself move. She just tucks her legs up under herself and strains as she tries to push herself forward. And she's only 4 months old! She's a smart one :-) I got to watch her for a few hours on Wednesday. My brother and I decided to take her to Home Depot because I had to pick up a couple of things. Poor girl - it scared her and she started wailing in the nail/screw aisle. Like the really sad, scared kind of cry. I felt so bad for her! My brother took her outside to calm down while I picked up my stuff. Ah, but she's still so cute and sweet!
Three.
I'm almost done with my work in the front yard. It has been tough, but it's going to look so much better! It doesn't look like much now, but next spring when all of those flowers are in bloom, it's going to be great! Here's a before and after.
Four.
I've been wanting a new tattoo for a really long time, but I'm trying to spend my money on wedding stuff instead of other stuff. So, I'm trying to wait until after the wedding. But it's so hard! I'm going to get a Korean-style tiger. One, to commemorate being in Korea, and two, because I think they look so damn cool. I'm going to get it on the lower right side of my back. Just the big tiger, not all the other little tigers/birds around it. Sweet.
Five.
Another before and after! We got our new couches delivered on Thursday, and I think they're great! I think we're going to have to put the tv up on the wall, though, because it's definitely not working in its current, temporary location. Also, on Tuesday I woke up and decided to paint the living room walls, so I did. It's called mushroom bisque. Just a nice, neutral, light brown color. Wow! It feels so much more like a grown-up home already! I tried to shoot from the same spot. The before pictures come first.

Six.
I ordered my "something blue" for the wedding. A really pretty vintage brooch that has been turned into a hair clip. I think it'll look gorgeous with my gown and my curls :-) Is this too much wedding stuff for this blog? I don't think so. I've been very judicious about my wedding talk on here. I think we have 8 more weeks now, by the way. Yay! Oh, you know what? I just realized that my engagement ring is also blue! So, I'm totally set for my something blue, lol.
Seven.
I just got a text from my honey. He's getting off early today and we're going to meet for lunch. Hooray! It's always fun to start your weekend early. Too bad I haven't showered yet today. TMI? I don't think so, lol. Oh well! I think this is a funny picture :-)

Seven Quick Takes - a day late, again!

One.
Wow, what a busy week! I had to work on a summer project for the social studies department and then I subbed for a friend who's teaching my class in summer school for three days. Wow, I'm so glad I don't teach summer school! It's good money, but it would be grueling to have to do that every day for six weeks. I sure enjoy having my summers off!

Two.
We took our engagement photos this morning! It was a lot of fun, although there were about five bazillion gnats out. Yuck. Thank goodness for Photo Shop! I don't want any gnats on my face in the pictures, lol. Our friend Pat came with us so he could hang out with Ramona, since we wanted to have her in some of the shots. I had to bring treats so she would sit there with us for the pictures! She did great, though. I can't wait to see how they all turned out!

Three.
I guess this makes 9 weeks now until the wedding. It's moving fast! We're looking forward to it, though. We're especially looking forward to getting to party with all of our friends! Good times. Some of the teachers I met on my Korea trip are going to make it out here for the party, so I'm super excited about that! I love friends, and I love parties, so this will be a great time!

Four.
I've been wearing the same hoop earrings for six years. I pretty much never take them out. Well, yesterday morning when I woke up, I saw that the right earring was missing, and I can't find it anywhere!! I feel so naked without them! So, we were at the farmer's market this morning and I bought some new earrings. Not hoop earrings, though. Dangly ones. They're cute. I guess I have to buy lots more earrings now, since my hoops are MIA. How about a picture?

Five.
I decided to buy a pack of fake nails at the grocery store for $5 because I didn't have time to get my nails done before the photos this morning. It was a pretty good looking quick fix! I won't do it every time, since I really like getting a manicure at a salon, but it's good to know they can look really good if I'm in a hurry and don't want to spend much money! They're supposed to last for a week, so we'll see. PS. my hand looks ginormous in this picture!! But, you can see my pretty ring, too :-)

Six.
My brother lives in VA, now! I'm so happy he's out here. Hopefully he'll come up here soon to look for a job, instead of searching down where my parents live. I'd love for him to live up here... but I don't necessarily want him to live WITH me, and he's unemployed for now, so he can stay where he is at my parents' place until he has some money, lol. I'm going down this weekend to see him... and my sweet Alivia, of course!

Seven.
I bought some more plants this morning at the farmer's market. I don't know what kind, but they're really pretty. I'll take a picture of the front and post it once I have everything planted. Not today, though. I don't feel like working out there today. Maybe later this week... we'll see!

Just for fun

A word cloud of my latest blog posts. I really say "just" that much?

Seven Quick Takes - a day late

One.
I saw this fun post over at mental_floss showcasing some cool Sesame Street guests. Some of the them really made me laugh. I like REM's Furry, Happy Monsters :-)

Two.
It's August already?? I guess half of my July was spent in Korea, but still! My summer is going by very quickly. And what have I been doing? Mostly taking walks with Ramona and trying to fix my ugly front yard. It's getting way better. When we moved in, we had a bunch of those bushy hedge bushes that flower for about 6 days in the spring and then are just ugly the rest of the year. Our neighbor told us they've been there for YEARS. Makes sense, since the house was a rental for over 10 years. Well, I hate them, so I've been digging them out and replacing them with flowers. Not an easy task by any means. Years of growth means deep roots. But, I've pulled three out and I have two left. It's looking better and better already!

Three.
I'm getting married 10 weeks from today. Is that right? Yes, I just double-checked. 10 weeks. Wow! We've got everything ready to go... we just have to pay the deposit to the caterers. Next week are our engagement shots. I almost decided against them, since we don't really have that much time before the wedding, but then reconsidered because that means we'll get to know our photographer better, which in turn means more meaningful photos on the big day, I do believe. Plus, we're bringing Ramona to the engagement session. Not the wedding, though, much to Eric's disappointment!

Four.
I just bought new couches. I know, I know, I'm trying to pay for a wedding, but they were on sale and I don't have to pay any interest until next July... by which time, of course, I will have already paid them off, plus the wedding. See how smart I am? Here's what they look like:

Five.
Oh! The honeymoon! Eric hasn't planned that yet. He better get on that! We're not actually going until Thanksgiving week, though, so we have a little time. We're going somewhere in the Mediterranean, since we'll be heading out to Holland for wedding celebrations with my mom's side of the family. Yay! That reminds me... I have to call my oma today...

Six.
Hot, hot, hot! It's been REALLY hot, here. Well, everywhere, I hear. And SO humid! Blech. It's oppressive, to me. That's why I can only do so much at a time in the garden. Yesterday, I was working out there in the 90-degree heat/HUMIDITY, planted a new flower, and then started to go inside as the rain began. As I stepped onto the porch, though, I felt a nice cool breeze and thought, hey, this feels good. In fact, they were 70-degree breezes blowing in. So, I sat out on the front steps in the rain and it was so refreshing! I felt like a new woman :-)

Seven.
I think I'm going to hire a maid service. Just to come in once a month and deep clean. It will make my life much nicer and happier. It's only $118 a month... that's like, two fewer times a month of eating out. I can handle that for a cleaning service. Yes, indeed.
