Week 5: Thoughts from Elly

Happy Thanksgiving! What a way to end a week, with turkey and cranberry sauce! Of course, Mommy and Daddy did all the turkey eating, while I just sat around looking extremely cute. But I'm getting ahead of myself, here.

My fifth week of life began with my first car trip to Richmond to visit Mommy's family. Mommy and Daddy said I did great in the car! I don't remember the ride at all, though, because I was asleep for the whole thing. I sure do like my car seat!

When we got there, I was able to meet Aunt Christina for the first time, ever. Mommy was happy, too, since the last time she saw her was when she and Daddy got married two years ago.

Aunt Christina made a really cool present for me! She's really crafty, and with her mad skills, she designed an iron-on for one of my onesies! Mommy hasn't taken any pictures of me wearing it, yet, but this is it. Trust me, I look really cute in it!
Actually, Mommy didn't take any pictures at all while we were down in Richmond! I think that's because Aunt Christina took so many awesome pictures, though. She really likes photography - she even blogs about it over here! Now, Mommy is just waiting for Aunt Christina to go through and edit all of the photos so we can see them. I had a lot of fun spending time with her. She even told me that she might give me some more cousins one day!

Speaking of cousins, Alivia and Blake were there, too! I already love them so much! I'm really glad we get to be cousins, and I'm so excited to spend time with them as we get older. Their Mommy and and Daddy were also there - that's my Auntie Jen and Uncle Lance. And of course, Oma and Papa were there! I sure felt the love from everyone because I got held and cuddled all day long!

Unfortunately, there was one downside to our visit. On Monday, Mommy got a cold that she caught while we were there. Then on Tuesday, Daddy got sick, too. So, it was no surprise when I started coughing and sneezing on Thursday night! Only a month old, and I already have my first cold! It's definitely not fun, but I'm staying pretty positive about the whole thing. I just REALLY hate it when Mommy sticks that thing up my nose and sucks out the mucus. Yuck! It makes me cry and cry. She always lets me eat right afterwards, though, and that makes me feel better right away!
On Thursday, the day I turned 5 weeks old, it was Thanksgiving. This was my first real holiday! Even though I was 11 days old on Halloween, I didn't really do anything, so I don't think that counts.

We had our first official Thanksgiving dinner in Richmond with Mommy's family last weekend, but on the real day, we drove up to Nana's house in Maryland. There, I got to see Uncle Scott, Nana, and Aunties Kelly, Summer, and Holly (Auntie Kelly is actually Daddy's aunt, and Summer and Holly are his cousins, but they all said they want to be my aunties!). I had a great time being passed around and held by everyone. My head got lots of kisses that day!!

Here are Ramona and me hanging out while everyone was noshing on turkey and stuffing.
By the way, on Friday morning I went back to the doctor to check up on my reflux. The medicine has been helping me. Even though I still spit up after I eat, it's a lot less and I'm not in as much pain anymore. The doctor said I'm looking great and gaining the right amount of weight. In fact, I'm up to 8 lbs 8 oz now! That's a full 2 lbs heavier than my lowest weight at 4 days old! Mommy and Daddy were both so glad to find out I'm really thriving!

Now, I just have to get over this cold and feel like my normal self again. Once that happens, Mommy is going to try to get me to sleep in my crib (in my own room!) during the night. Wish me luck!!

One Month

Elly turned a month old, yesterday! I can't believe how quickly the time has already gone. Next thing I know, I'll be dropping her off with her college roommate!

I looked around the Interwebs for cute ways to document her growth, and loved the idea of taking a picture of her in the same place every month/year. We'll see how long we have this particular chair!

So, here is the little one at the end of her first month.

Things I know about Elly:

  • She loves to listen to Hank Williams
  • She would rather be held than not
  • Her poor little tummy hurts a lot, so I don't mind holding her a lot
  • She's already outgrown her "newborn" clothes, but doesn't quite fit in the "0-3 month" outfits, yet
  • She is a comfort sucker - she loves her pacifier
  • She is very curious about colorful rattles
  • She finds Daddy's face very interesting
  • She loves to be snuggled with Mommy
  • Taking a bath calms her down dramatically
  • She will sleep through a 2-hour car ride without making a peep
  • She is well-loved by everyone who knows her!

I love you, Elly girl :)

Week 4: Thoughts from Elly

Hi there!

I've reached the 4-week milestone! On Sunday, I'll be a month old. So much has happened to me over the last four weeks! I've gone from a sleepy, squishy-faced newborn to an active, wide-eyed baby.

This week started off with a visit to the doctor. Over the weekend I started spitting up a lot more and even vomited a couple of times. When Daddy was a baby like me, he had something called pyloric stenosis. That meant that his food was blocked from going from his stomach to his intestines, and he had to have surgery to fix it. Mommy and Daddy wanted to make sure that wasn't happening to me, since it usually starts around 3 weeks old.

Well, it turns out I don't have that, but I do have a pretty bad case of acid reflux. The doctor gave me some medicine called Zantac that I have to take three times a day! So far I think it's helping with the pain (I was arching my back and grimacing a lot after eating), even though I still spit up a lot!

I got to go on two walks this week with Mommy and Ramona. Mommy wraps me up in her Moby wrap, puts a hat on my head, and then wears one of her maternity coats so I stay nice and warm in that cold November air!

If I could be wrapped up against Mommy 24/7, I'd probably be the happiest baby in the world! I'm getting better about remembering that I need to sleep on my own too, though. Sometimes I still need to be close to Mommy all day long, but I have been able to take naps in my swing or hang out in my bassinet while Mommy gets things done.

I'm also getting better about my eating schedule and sleeping at night. One night, I even slept from 11pm-4am! Usually, I wake up for my first nighttime feeding around 3, but some nights I still get up every couple of hours. I promised Mommy it would get better as I got older, though!

Daddy and I have gotten to hang out some more this week. Mommy took a picture of us - she said Daddy looked silly, but I was really cute, so she cropped him out of the picture! What do you think?
She also took some video of us having fun together. I sure love my Daddy!

This week, Mommy tried out cloth diapers on me. I wore them for two days, but Mommy says she thinks I'm still a little too small to switch to them permanently, because we had some "leakage" issues down my legs. She told me I sure looked cute in them, though! Maybe in another month when I've gained some more weight and they fit a little more snugly on me.
Oh yah! Since I've been spitting up a lot more from my reflux, Mommy started putting bibs on me to keep my clothes cleaner. Here are a couple of my favorites!

One last thing - Thursday was Uncle Chris's 19th birthday. Happy Birthday!! I love you!

Blog Share

I've participated in a few Blog Share events in the past. I missed today's share, hosted by -R- at And You Know What Else, because I *somehow* couldn't find the time to write my anonymous post...

However, I love reading from the participants, so I thought I'd share the list. Visit, comment, and enjoy!!

A couple of things about my babe

1. I love to "style" her hair so that it's sticking up all over the place. I don't know why, I just think it's cute :) Here she is, sporting the faux-hawk look. Of course, Daddy is always close behind, smoothing it back down.

2. I also love to watch her. She makes all kinds of faces. I try to make my videos short since nobody wants to watch a baby doing basically nothing for as long as Mommy or grandma might...

3. She's a fun one!

Week 3: Thoughts from Elly

Hey, how's it going?

Today, I'm 22-days-old. Three weeks, already! I had to go back to the doctor yesterday to have my weight checked, since she wasn't happy that I hadn't gotten back up to my birthweight by last week's appointment. I'm happy to report that I weighed a solid 7 lb 7.5 oz! Everything is right on track, now.

This week, Mommy is trying to get me started on more of a routine. I had a few nights where I was waking up and fussing every hour, and that makes it hard for Mommy and Daddy. One night, I even woke up at 1:15 am and didn't go back to sleep until after 3! And even then, Mommy had to move me into bed with her around 4:30 so that I would finally sleep quietly. Also, during the day on Monday, I cried any time she wasn't holding me. That must have been really rough for her!

Auntie Jen sent Mommy a book called On Becoming Baby Wise that talks about creating structure so that I will sleep better at night. She started reading it to get some ideas on how to do that with me. She also ordered two other books so that she can blend all of the theories out there into something that will work best for us!

Already, she's seen some improvement in me! Last night, I only woke up twice, at 1:30 and 4:15. Mommy said that was right on schedule! And she is feeling much more rested, today!

One of things I need to keep working on is self-soothing. It's hard right now, because I still can't quite figure out where my hands are. Once my mouth happens to find a finger, though, I love it!

On Tuesday, Mommy's friend Diana came over for a visit and we went on a nice, loooooong walk together. Even Ramona came along! The leaves on the trees are so pretty (even though I didn't really see much of them, since I slept during the whole walk!). Mommy was really happy to spend so much time out of the house with me, too.

Daddy and I have really been getting to know each other better. He likes to play with me after he comes home from work. I think it's so interesting to look at him and listen to his voice - it's so different from Mommy! I think we're going to be really good friends!

I'm really excited for the next couple of weeks to get here! On Thursday, Aunt Christina is flying out here to visit and I'll get to meet her for the very first time! Then, it'll be my first Thanksgiving. I think I might get to meet some more of Daddy's relatives, then. Oh, and I'll be taking my first long car ride! Mommy says it's good that the ride will only be about an hour and a half, though. She wouldn't want my first experience on a trip to be much longer than that! I do pretty well in the car just driving around town, so we'll see how it goes!

Well, I think that's pretty much all for this week. Talk to you, soon!

Photo update

I got the pictures from my mom's visit last week, so I thought I'd do a little photo update! Elly is just as sweet as can be!

Sleeping on Mommy. Elly has decided over the past couple of days that this is where she prefers to be. Yesterday, she basically cried every time I put her down. It made for a long day for me. Today, we've been working together on wearing the Moby wrap around the house so she can be snuggled against me, but I'm not stuck on the couch holding her. It's been pretty good so far (although I do have her in the bassinet right now, and she's making some grunting noises, but no crying, yet!)

Just cuteness.

Sucking her thumb. I love how she does this. As soon as her thumb finds her mouth, her hand just stays there. Sometimes she pokes herself in the eye, but she's getting better about avoiding that.

Storytime with Daddy. Here, we were reading I Can Fly, a classic Little Golden Book with beautiful illustrations by Mary Blair. The little girl in the book makes me imagine Elly in a couple of years!

Hanging out with Oma.

Elly's first bath in the Puj tub! I'm going to attempt it again today, all on my own! PS. If you have any baby showers to attend, give them this tub. Seriously.

In search of something to suck on, Elly gave herself this mad hickey, yesterday. Ouch, baby!

Week 2: Thoughts from Elly

Hi, everyone!

Today I'm 16 days old. That's over half a month, already! Mommy says the time is already going by so fast, but it's felt like a lifetime, to me! (Did you get my joke, there? I'm already working on my comedy routine!)

This week I got to meet so many new people! On Saturday, Papa, Auntie Jen, Uncle Lance, and my cousins Alivia and Blake came for a visit. It was so much fun! Alivia was really nice to me and did a great job holding me! It's good that she already got so much practice holding Blake this year!

Papa tried to take a picture of all of his grandkids together, but we were a little too squirmy. This was the best we could do for him!

Oh! My umbilical cord fell off this week! I think Mommy already told you about that, though. She says I have the cutest little belly button, ever!

Oma came to stay with us for a few days this week. She took a lot of pictures, but she hasn't sent them to Mommy yet, so I'll have to update you later with those.

While Oma was here, I had my first bath in a tub! I really loved it. Mommy got a tub that is so comfortable for me and fits right in the bathroom sink. As soon as she put me in the warm water, I just curled up and lay there letting her scrub me down. It was really cozy! I got cold, though, once she took me out of the tub! Good thing I had a nice, warm towel to wrap up in.

I also got to spend an evening with just Oma and me while Mommy and Daddy went out to dinner together. We had a great time. Basically, I just looked at her while she fed me a bottle and sang me lullabies. Oma won't sing for just anyone, so I feel pretty special!

This week I also got my nails trimmed for the first time and started having some tummy time sessions. Mommy was so scared to clip my nails! But Auntie Jen told her what to do and sat right next to her. She did great! All my nails got cut and I didn't make a peep!

Tummy time, on the other hand, is not so great. Mommy says it's to help my neck get stronger so I can hold my head up on my own, but I hate it! Maybe if I get really good at it, she'll stop making me practice so much!

Thursday, I had my 2-week check-up at the doctor. I weighed 6 lb 14 oz, almost back to my birth weight! Oh, I also grew a 1/2-inch already! The doctor said everything else looked really good and I'm doing everything I should be. Thank goodness! I know that makes Mommy and Daddy happy.

This week, Daddy started reading me a different bedtime story every night. It's my favorite time of the day! Daddy's favorite stories to read are in a book he bought called Richard Scarry's Best Storybook Ever. I guess the title says it right there! I really like to look at Daddy while he's reading to me. I hope he keeps reading to me every night!

Mommy says I've been much more alert and active the past few days. I guess I'm just starting to get used to being out in the world, so it's time for me to really start checking it out. Sometimes I'll go for one or two hours with my eyes open, just looking at Mommy and Daddy and taking in everything around me. There's so much for me to learn about!

Oh, one last thing before I go! Daddy keeps saying I look most like his side of the family, but check out this picture of Mommy when she was only 1-day old (and what do you think of Papa when he was only 22?). I think you can definitely tell that I belong to her!

Well, that's it for this week. So much has already happened... I wonder what's next for me? Guess I'll find out soon enough!

7 billion

According to this BBC interactive tool, statistically speaking, Elly was the 6,994,978,145th person alive on Earth. That's a lot of people born over the last 11 days!
